So if you came here expecting to hear about the latest vacuum cleaner sucking appendages I am so sorry to disappoint. Today’s topic is emotional attachment, the bonds we create towards people, places and things in our lives.
I recently moved house for the umpteenth time. I threw away and gave away several truckloads of schtuff. I spared nothing due to sentimental value with the exception of my lifesize blowup doll (that I swear I only use to practice CPR).
Suddenly I realized, I have cruised through my life with very little emotional connection to anything. I have bounced from here to there and back again. And I have accumulated plenty of objects. Yet none of them hold my imagination or occupy a space in my heart.
In fact, there might have been a point in the distant past when I treated people with the same disassociation.
Then, my life began to churn and I learned the importance of family. I came to understand that flesh and blood – in any age – is the best emotional anchor for when the seas get rough.
The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus said all life is change. He noticed we could never step into the swirling river twice in the same spot. He forgot to mention he had loved ones on the river’s edge waiting for his safe return.
Do you have loved ones waiting on your river’s edge for your safe return?

ms. attachment | June 22nd, 2009, 9:43 amI once had someone standing at the river’s edge waiting for my safe return. But from where he stood, the river seemed too wide … and in the end he wouldn’t allow me risk the swim to join him on the other side.
